Team MMC India Shines at International Mathematics Competition (IMC) 2026 with Outstanding
Global Debut
Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana, Pune is delighted
to announce the outstanding performance of Team MMC India at the
International Mathematics Competition (IMC) for University Students 2026,
held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, from 27th July to 3rd August 2026. Hosted by the
American University in Bulgaria and organized by University College London, the
competition brought together 447 of the world's finest undergraduate students, representing
80 university teams from across the globe.
Representing India through the Madhava Mathematics Competition
(MMC), Team MMC India delivered an exceptional performance in only
its second participation at the IMC, bringing international recognition to Indian
undergraduate mathematics.
The team members achieved the following distinctions:
- Bhavya Tiwari (IIT Bombay) – Grand First Prize (79 points)
- Shounak Kar (ISI Kolkata) – First Prize (65 points)
- Parth Vartak (IIT Bombay) – First Prize (57 points)
- Nirav Bhattad (IIT Bombay) – Second Prize (55 points)
Team MMC India was led by Dr. Vinaykumar Acharya
of Fergusson College, Pune, and Dr. Udayan Prajapati
of St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad. In addition, students receive both online and
classroom training from renowned mathematicians. Their dedicated mentoring and academic
guidance played a crucial role in preparing the students for this prestigious international
competition.
The students were selected through the Madhava Mathematics Competition,
India's premier national-level mathematics competition for undergraduate students,
organized by Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana, Pune, followed by a rigorous selection
process conducted in Mumbai and Kolkata. Nearly 3,000 students
from across the country participated in the 2026 edition of the competition.
The Madhava Mathematics Competition, started in 2009–10 at
S. P. College, Pune under the leadership of Prof. Vinayak Sholapurkar,
has emerged as one of India's most respected platforms for identifying and nurturing
undergraduate mathematical talent. Since 2023–24, the competition has been organized
by Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana, Pune. Prof. Vinayak Sholapurkar,
Adjunct Professor, Bhaskracahrya Pratishthana, Pune serves as the Chief Coordinator,
while Dr. Geetanjali Phatak, Head, Department of Mathematics, S.
P. College, Pune serves as the Deputy Chief Coordinator.
The participation of Team MMC India in IMC 2026 was made possible through the generous
support of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic
Energy, Government of India, under the leadership of its Chairman,
Dr. Dipendra Prasad. The financial assistance and encouragement
provided by NBHM enabled India's talented young mathematicians to gain invaluable
international exposure and compete with the best students worldwide.
Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana also gratefully acknowledges the unwavering support
of Prof. Shashikant Katre, Custodian of the institution, whose
continued encouragement has significantly strengthened the Madhava Mathematics Competition
and its mission of promoting mathematical excellence.
This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana
and for Indian undergraduate mathematics education. It reflects the success of India's
efforts to identify, mentor, and nurture exceptional mathematical talent and demonstrates
the capability of Indian students to compete and excel at the highest international
level.
